I got an update regarding the Defense of Marriage amendment to our state Constitution that I'll share with you. As you've heard, a St. Louis City circuit judge ruled the protection of traditional marriage unconstitutional. Attorney General Koster has refused to defend the Missouri Constitution so Speaker Jones, Senate Pro-Tem Dempsey and Speaker Elect Diehl delivered a letter to the AG asking him to petition the court for an emergency stay until the Supreme Court can rule on the decision of the Circuit Judge. We are not alone in these efforts. Recently, a Cincinnati Court of Appeals upheld the rights of Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, and Michigan to regulate the definition of Marriage and very likely sets up a review by the US Supreme Court. Our Attorney General Koster needs to uphold the laws of Missouri like he is sworn to do and stop playing political games to help his run for Governor!
A couple of interesting bills were filed lately. One of them would make it illegal for anyone to text and drive. There is definitive research showing this to be a major cause of accidents. I think it will find a great deal of support. The other interesting idea would strengthen the laws concerning use of the passing lane on 4 lane roads. Nearly every state has laws regulating the use of the passing lane but recently many states are increasing enforcement and finding that it cuts down on traffic jams and reduces accidents. As our interstates get more crowded, it makes sense to keep slower moving vehicles in the right lane. Some states regulate trucks and vehicles pulling trailers to 5 miles per hour less than car traffic and to stay in the right lane except when passing. As MODOT struggles with funding for new roads we will be seeing more of this type of regulation changes.
Come down to the McDonald County Library in Pineville on Saturday, Jan.10 where Kent Farnsworth will be autographing his new book. This is part of "Read for a Need", a challenge to support foster children in McDonald and Newton Counties. Dr. Farnsworth, the author of 5 novels, is donating two dollars of every sale to New-Mac CASA.
