Is it just me or does it seem like our Governor is trying to pattern his bad behavior after what the Obama Administration has to say? Last week the Supreme Court upheld Hobby Lobby and their stand against abortifacients. That's right, abortifacients or abortion drugs are what the decision was about. It absolutely did not have anything to do with contraception. Contraceptive measures are what are taken to prevent pregnancies and abortifacients are what are taken to terminate pregnancies. One prevents the creation of a living being and the other destroys a living being. The spin being applied by the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton is that the Court ruled that Hobby Lobby doesn't have to provide contraceptive medication or devices with their company insurance. Why would they lie about the ruling? Probably the same reason that Governor Nixon is saying that HB's 1307 and 1313 do not have an exception for rape and incest. These bills DO NOT change current law allowing immediate medical treatment and abortive measures for rape and incest victims. What it DOES provide for, is if a woman decides against medical care and becomes pregnant, the waiting period for an abortion changes from 24 hours to 72 hours. The purpose is to give a woman a little extra time to consider the decision to have the procedure. Why can't our leaders just tell it like it is? No wonder politicians aren't trusted. The simple truth is that they are more worried about upsetting big money donors by protecting the unborn than doing the right thing! I am confident that there are more than enough of us in the Missouri Legislature who treasure all life to overturn Nixon's veto.
There are still many bills on the Governor's desk. Some will be signed some will be vetoed and still others will be allowed to become law without his signature. Several of the bills on his desk are Child Abuse and Neglect issues that I have either sponsored or co-signed. I am hopeful that they will survive his veto pen, but I am quickly learning that just because a bill is worthy or needed, is no assurance that it will pass. Some of the much needed pay increase for Children's Service workers and Law Enforcement personnel has been withheld awaiting funding. We are hopeful that these will be restored soon. We'll know more by next week, until then I am and remain in your service.
